A 0.25% Interest Difference Can Save You Lakhs

Don’t compare loans based only on the advertised interest rate or monthly EMI. Even a small reduction in the interest rate can translate into substantial savings over the loan tenure. Compare EMI, total interest, processing fees, and overall borrowing cost before choosing the loan that truly offers the best value.

+ Advanced (GST & other charges)

⚠️ This is an indicative estimate only. Legal/valuation charges can be entered under each loan’s “Advanced” section — but prepayment/foreclosure charges and loan insurance are not captured here and should be checked separately with the lender.

Why Compare Total Cost, Not Just Interest Rate?

The lowest interest rate doesn’t always mean the cheapest loan. A lender with a slightly higher rate but no processing fee can end up cheaper than one with a lower rate and a 1% fee on a large loan amount.

Formula used: Total Cost = Total Interest Paid + Fees & Charges (processing fee, optionally with 18% GST, plus any other one-time charges entered).

If your loan amounts differ across offers (e.g. one lender approved ₹20 Lakh, another ₹50 Lakh), comparing absolute Total Cost is misleading — a bigger loan naturally costs more in rupee terms regardless of which offer is actually better. This tool ranks offers by Cost per ₹1 Lakh Borrowed instead, which stays fair whether your loan amounts match or not.

On fees: by default we add 18% GST to your processing fee (standard for financial services in India) since most lenders quote fees before tax. If your quoted fee is already tax-inclusive, uncheck the GST option under “Advanced” for that loan.

📋 What Else to Check Before Choosing

  • Prepayment / foreclosure charges — some lenders charge a penalty if you repay early, which can offset savings from a lower rate.
  • Fixed vs floating rate — a lower floating rate today can rise later; check the reset terms.
  • Loan insurance requirements — some lenders bundle mandatory insurance into the loan, raising the effective cost.
  • Turnaround time & documentation — a slightly costlier loan with faster disbursal may matter more for time-sensitive purchases.

Factors to Consider When Comparing Loan Offers

Factors to Consider When Comparing Loan Offers

Before choosing a loan, it’s important to evaluate more than just the advertised interest rate. The best loan offer balances affordability, flexibility, and long-term savings. Consider the following factors to ensure you’re making an informed borrowing decision.

1. Interest Rate

A lower interest rate generally reduces the total interest payable over the loan tenure. Even a small difference can significantly affect the overall borrowing cost.

2. Loan Tenure

A longer repayment period lowers your monthly EMI but increases the total interest paid. A shorter tenure results in higher EMIs but helps you become debt-free sooner.

3. Processing Fees & Other Charges

Many lenders charge processing fees, documentation charges, legal fees, or valuation charges. Compare the total upfront costs, not just the interest rate.

4. EMI Affordability

Choose an EMI that comfortably fits your monthly budget. Lower EMIs may look attractive but often result in higher lifetime interest costs.

5. Prepayment & Foreclosure Charges

If you plan to repay your loan early, check whether the lender imposes prepayment or foreclosure penalties that could reduce your savings.

6. Fixed vs Floating Interest Rate

A fixed-rate loan offers predictable repayments, while a floating-rate loan may become cheaper or more expensive depending on market interest rate movements.

7. Loan Approval & Disbursement Time

For urgent financing needs, compare the lender’s approval process, documentation requirements, and expected disbursement timeline.

8. Customer Service & Digital Experience

Easy online applications, responsive customer support, and convenient repayment options can improve your overall borrowing experience.

Common Loan Comparison Mistakes to Avoid

Comparing multiple loan offers is one of the smartest ways to reduce your borrowing costs, but many borrowers make decisions based solely on the advertised interest rate or monthly EMI. Hidden charges, loan tenure, repayment flexibility, and other terms can significantly impact the total amount you repay over the life of the loan.

Understanding these common loan comparison mistakes can help you evaluate lenders more effectively, avoid unnecessary costs, and choose a loan that aligns with your financial goals and repayment capacity.

Before finalizing your loan, watch out for these common mistakes:

1. Comparing Only the Interest Rate

A lower interest rate doesn’t always mean a cheaper loan. Compare the total borrowing cost, including processing fees, taxes, and other applicable charges.

2. Ignoring Processing Fees and Other Charges

Upfront costs such as processing fees, documentation charges, insurance premiums, and GST can significantly increase the overall cost of the loan.

3. Choosing the Lowest EMI

A lower EMI often comes with a longer repayment tenure, which increases the total interest payable. Compare both EMI and lifetime loan cost.

Common Loan Comparison Mistakes

4. Comparing Different Loan Amounts or Tenures

For an accurate comparison, keep the loan amount and repayment tenure the same across all loan offers. Otherwise, the results may not reflect the true cost difference.

5. Overlooking Prepayment and Foreclosure Charges

If you plan to repay your loan early, check for prepayment or foreclosure penalties, as these charges can reduce the savings from early repayment.

6. Ignoring Your Repayment Capacity

Choose an EMI that fits comfortably within your monthly budget. Borrowing more than you can comfortably repay may lead to financial stress and increase the risk of missed payments.
