Understanding GST in India — A simple explanation

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India’s unified indirect tax system that replaced VAT, service tax, excise duty and multiple state levies. GST simplifies taxation by applying one tax across the country with three main components:

1. CGST — Central GST

Collected by the Central Government on intra-state supplies.

2. SGST — State GST

Collected by State Governments on intra-state supplies.

3. IGST — Integrated GST

Applied on inter-state supplies and imports.

When a buyer and seller are in the same state, GST is split into CGST + SGST.
When they are in different states, GST is charged as IGST.

GST Slabs in India

Common GST slab rates are:

  • 0% – essentials
  • 5% – food items, medicines
  • 12% – processed foods, utensils, services
  • 18% – electronics, services, general goods
  • 28% – luxury items
  • Cess – tobacco, aerated drinks, luxury cars

Correct calculation matters because GST affects pricing, claiming ITC, invoicing, and tax filing.

Note: At the 56th meeting of the GST Council (3 September 2025), major rationalisation of GST slabs was approved — effective from 22 September 2025 almost all goods and services shifted to just two core GST rates: 5% (merit rate) and 18% (standard rate), replacing the earlier four-slab system of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. So, as per the September 2025 reforms, most goods have moved out of the 28% slab into 18% or below. A few specific goods (notably tobacco/cess-linked items) may still continue under 28% or compensation cess-linked rates until notified. Refer FAQ on GST Official website.
